Paddling and exploring caves in west Algarve.

When planning the trip to Sagres for Kristina’s birthday she did some investigations on internet and a SUP (Stand Up Paddling) excursion, exploring the caves in western Algarve caught her interest and was booked with ”Algarve SUP Tours”.

We were picked up on time at the meeting point at Intermache in Sagres, then transported back towards Lagos to Raposeira where we went south quite a bit on a dirt road Praia do Barranco. Praia do Barranco is a hidden beach with not the easiest access witch also limits the number of visitors and there we met the rest of the crew of team of Algarve SUP Tours plus the rest of the participants – mostly Germans but also an American couple plus us and we were immediately named ”the Vikings” possibly because of my wild appearance. Ibrahimovic was soon discussed by the football crazy Portuguese that was (with all rights) immensely proud of the Euro 16 title.

Equipment (stand up boards and wet suits) and instruction was handed out, we were divided in two teams (8 persons in each) and of we went to explore the coast line with all the caves.

Even if this part of Algarve is extremely windy we were protected 90% of the time from the strong wind but the wet suits are handy as water and the little wind you are exposed to can make the 3 hour tour quite cool.

Pedro our guide did a good job in creating a good mood in the group right from the start, he showed us the different caves and rocks surrounded by crystal clear water. Most of the caves we could paddle into either standing or lying down, in one cave we had to swim and one cave those who wanted could jump from a cliff 3 – 4 meters up. It was a magical experience well worth the money, as a memory we got a flash memory with all the pictures that Pedro took and here is a selection that hopefully can reflect some of the magic experience we had much thanks to the crew off Algarve SUP Tours took good care of us.

If anyone would be in the area of Sagres I highly recommend this tour with Algarve SUP Tours, you can find their contact information on internet (http://www.algarve-sup-tours.com/en/).
